Bodie Shargel is a lifelong resident of Santa Cruz County, and he’s fighting for the best future for all of us. During his lifetime, he’s seen Santa Cruz fail to live up to its values of environmentalism, equity, and justice. That’s why Bodie is running for Santa Cruz’s 4th City Council district–to uplift and ensure a better future for the community he knows and loves.

I’m running for the Santa Cruz I love.

Living in Santa Cruz County my entire life, I’ve seen our city’s progressive reputation clash with its reality. As politicians fail to offer anything of significance, it’s no wonder that only 47% of Santa Cruz voted in the last election. I’m running an accessible and transparent campaign to show our town that government can work for ALL people.

My top priorities

  • Affordable Housing

Santa Cruz and our communities are in a crisis. Rents are increasing dramatically, affordable housing isn’t being built fast enough, and residents are being priced out of their homes. I will fight for more affordable housing and against gentrification and displacement.

  • Environment

Climate change is the defining issue of this century. We’re shown the stakes on a daily basis in a place with so much natural beauty, and proximity to a rising ocean. I’m proud to live in a community that’s so conscious about our environment, and I want to continue that sentiment through policy. We’ve already set some good goals, but we can do more, and we must do more.

  • Economic democracy

We need an economy that works for all of Santa Cruz, not just wealthy out-of-town interests. We need more small businesses, which keep profits local and enrich the community. We need to move past the Reagan-era trickle down economics that are echoed in city policy. We need to fight for unions, which give workers dignity and a seat at the table. We need to promote worker co-ops which give the working class freedom, and democratic control of their own lives. I’ll fight for all of these.
